Smiles Are Free

The homeless man shuffled towards me,
not looking at me, unsure what he’d find
on my face. But I willed him to look
at me – he glanced my way and I smiled –
and his whole face was transformed
by a shy grin – gifts exchanged between
fellow travelers sharing a path today.
“Silver and gold have I none, but such
as I have give I thee…”
Smiles are free.
