The “Lasts”

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
– Dr. Seuss

This week I’ve found myself being conscious of all the “lasts” – the last time I’ll ever do an algebra problem with a student; the last time I’ll do symmetrical art with a student; the last time I’ll teach a student how to recognize when a paragraph can be split into two; the last time I’ll talk about trench warfare, and the drummer boys in the Civil War, and why civilizations start around rivers; the last time I’ll say good-bye to my students at the end of a school year…

  1. Very moving Karen. And thought provoking. That quote attributed to Seuss reminds me of a quote I saw in The Readers Digest Magazine when I was a teenager. The quote was from Matthew Arnold and it was above a full page photo of a young tommy Gazaelle leaping into the air , with a hot orange African sun behind him and the quote is ” Is it so small a thing to have enjoyed the sun, to have lived light in the spring,to have loved,to have thought,to have done.” It gave my teenage self chill bumps and it still does. Your post tonight got me thinking about it and I have not in many years! Take care friend! Rick
