I am typing one-handed at the moment because I have a kitty purring under my chin. She is watching my fingers move on the keyboard. She seems fascinated with the workings of humans and their machinery. She is keeping me sane.
And now a prayer: Please, Love, give me courage. Fill my heart with kindness and hope. Help me nurture what is good in the world. Help me heal what is not.
Amen.
In the last several days I’ve been sort of toying with the idea of moving my family and myself to New Zealand. Beautiful country. The Fellowship of the Ring was filmed there. Big mountains. Nice people. They speak English there – which would be convenient.
But then I realized that the issues that we’re dealing with here in the States are the same issues our entire world is dealing with right now – racism, sexism, bigotry, hate. This is global. We are all of us up against the wall and we each have to do our part to heal these problems from wherever we are. We can’t escape this confrontation between good and evil. There’s no place we can go that’s safer than where we already are.
And I found this realization strangely comforting.
Wherever we are – Love is there. Wherever we are – Truth is there. Love fills all space and time. There is no place safer than where I am.
One of our students was called a “nigger” in the Fred Meyer parking lot yesterday. This is not okay. I know my friends who are Republican do not like bigotry any more than I do. Whatever candidate you voted for – whatever party you align with – we need to come together right now and stand up for our brothers and sisters. We need to stand united for kindness.

The next week may test our mettle. But we shall continue in the Humoristian way. We shall (cue in the music here – something rousing – maybe the theme song from Chariots of Fire) continue in our mission to spread laughter across our planet 24-7; we shall love the hell out of the cranky, crabby, and crusty; we shall bring mirthful merriment to the morose and melancholy; and hope and courage to the fearful and discouraged. We will love as the sun shines – without discrimination or agenda. And we will find the joy and beauty in each and every day. Go out there and make ’em laugh! Amen.

For crying out loud! When did it become unpatriotic and divisive to want to bring people of different backgrounds together?!! When did showing love and kindness to others become a political issue?! You’d think people of every stripe and polka dot would at least be able to agree on the notion that kindness and love are good things! If this has now become a partisan issue – I want to belong to the party that promotes love and kindness, thank you very much.
